한국은 다른 나라에 비해 재활용과 분리배출을 꽤 엄격하게 하는 편인 것 같다. 나는 여러 나라를 가봤는데, 해외에서 쓰레기를 우리나라만큼 세세하게 분류하지 않고 버리는 모습을 보면 가끔 놀랄 때가 있다.
특히 오래전에 미국에 처음 갔을 때가 기억난다. 내가 머물렀던 곳에서는 재활용품을 한국처럼 여러 종류로 세세하게 분리하지 않고, 대부분의 쓰레기를 한데 모아 버리는 것을 보고 꽤 충격을 받았다. 당시에는 미국 같은 선진국이라면 당연히 재활용도 굉장히 철저하게 할 거라고 생각했기 때문이다. 물론 솔직히 말하면 그렇게 버리는 게 편하기는 했다ㅋㅋ
반면 한국에서는 종이, 플라스틱, 유리병, 비닐, 스티로폼 등 재활용품을 종류별로 분리해서 버려야 한다. 일반 쓰레기는 종량제 봉투에 담아서 버리고, 음식물 쓰레기도 따로 분리해서 배출해야 한다.
재활용품을 배출할 수 있는 날짜도 사는 곳에 따라 조금씩 다르다. 예전에 살던 곳에서는 일주일에 한 번만 재활용품을 내놓을 수 있었는데, 지금 사는 아파트에서는 일주일에 두 번 배출할 수 있어서 훨씬 편리하다. 나는 평소 재활용품을 현관에 있는 붙박이장 안에 모아두었다가 배출일이 되면 한꺼번에 내놓는다.

I think Korea is pretty strict about recycling and waste sorting compared to other countries. I’ve traveled to quite a few countries, and I’m sometimes surprised when I see people abroad throwing things away without sorting their trash as carefully as we do in Korea.
I especially remember my first trip to the U.S. a long time ago. Where I was staying, they didn’t separate recyclables into as many categories as we did in Korea, and I was pretty shocked to see most of the trash being thrown away together. At the time, I assumed that a developed country like the U.S. would naturally have very strict recycling rules. But honestly, I have to admit, throwing everything away like that was pretty convenient.
In Korea, on the other hand, we have to separate recyclables into different categories, such as paper, plastic, glass bottles, plastic bags, and Styrofoam. Regular trash has to go into special pay-as-you-throw garbage bags, and food waste has to be separated as well.
The days when you can put out your recyclables also vary depending on where you live. At my old place, we could only put them out once a week, but at my current apartment complex, we can do it twice a week, which is much more convenient. I usually keep our recyclables in a built-in cabinet by the entrance and take them all out at once on recycling days.
